MATERIAL: WHAT ARE ROTOR BLADES MADE OF?

There are many types of wind turbines for onshore and offshore, for strong wind and weak wind regions. This is why rotor blades differ in their construction and material as well.

The average outer casing of the rotor blade consists of glass fibre, PU foam and epoxy resin. The great advantage of this sandwich structure is its low weight and enormous stability. High elongation at break and great surface loading with simultaneous elastic energy absorption and weather resistance can be a game changer for specific use cases. In addition, the material is harmless to health and applications are therefore unlimited.

 

Despite the fact that the blades served as a rotor for up to 20 years, they keep most of their characteristics values and capabilities.

HOW MANY LAYERS OF GLASS FIBER IS THE ROTOR BLADE MADE OF?

On average, there are about 70 layers of laminate on each other at the supporting points, the rest being normal sandwich construction.

WHAT IS THE ORIGINAL COLOR OF THE ROTOR BLADES?

The original color is RAL 7035 (light grey) in matte. There is a slight shine on it, but this should be minimized.

WHAT ARE THESE LETTERS ON THE ROTOR BLADE?

These are the letters used for the assembly to mark the plates.

WHAT KIND OF COPPER STRIP IS THIS?

This is a supplement to the lightning conductor.

WHAT ARE THESE DOTS IN THE FOAM?

Perforations, so that the resin can "flow through" during production (injection method - vacuum sucks resin through the entire leaf).

HOW HEAVY AND LONG IS ONE ROTOR BLADE?

The blade weighs about 10 tons when complete and is 45 m long. Each megawatt more needs about 10 tons more rotor blade weight.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE LIFE TIME OF A ROTOR BLADE?

Normally 18 to 20 years until it gets dismantled.
